The first meeting of the Ad Hoc Committee on the Flash Flood of 2009 will be held on Wednesday, August 19th. The Committee will begin its review by hearing from MSD officials on the circumstances surrounding the August 4th Flooding.
“We want to get an understanding of how the MSD System was impacted from the rainfall,” says Councilwoman Judith Green (D-1) who co-chairs the committee with Councilman Dan Johnson (D-21). “The following week will start hearing concerns of the public and how they were impacted.”
Green and Johnson are inviting Council members whose districts were affected to participate in the discussions. Additional members of the committee have not yet been announced.
In the weeks ahead, the group will also review short and long range planning goals of MSD as well as an update on the back flow system that was begun more than 15 years ago to keep storm sewer water from entering homes during heavy rain fall..
“Many people have taken part in the back flow program over the years,” says Johnson. “It may be time for an education effort about this program and let homeowners know its benefits.”
Both Green and Johnson say their focus will be on information and prevention efforts to avoid the devastating effects of flooding in the future.
“This Is not an indictment of MSD, they are a fine organization,” says Green. “But this was a devastating flood and it is incumbent upon on us to review ways to minimize any chance of it happening in the future.”
The Committee’s first meeting will take place in Council Chambers on Wednesday, August 19th at 6:30pm.
