Olympic Gold Medalist Tommie Smith to Sign New Autobiography Tomorrow

Wednesday August 8, 2007

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (August 8, 2007) Olympic Gold Medalist Tommie Smith will sign copies of his new autobiography Silent Gesture tomorrow evening. Copies of the book will also be on sale.

The book signing will be held tomorrow, Thursday, August 9th at the E & S Gallery at 108 South 10th Street from 5 to 7 p.m.

Tommie Smith won the gold medal in the 200-meter dash at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics.  He and teammate, bronze medal winner John Carlos, raised black gloved fists on the medal stand in a nonviolent protest of racism in America. The photograph of this action became one of the iconic images of the 1960s and 70s.  In Silent Gesture, Smith describes how this moment came to be and where it led him. He describes his life-long commitment to athletics, education, and human rights.

After a successful career as a professional football player and college coach and instructor, Tommie Smith went on to found Tommie Smith Youth Track Clubs for disadvantaged young people in Oakland California. The clubs have been successful not only in increasing physical fitness levels, but also in raising academic achievement among participants. Last year Tommie Smith brought his highly successful initiative to Louisville with the sponsorship of the Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness and the Mayor’s Healthy Hometown Movement.

This year’s second annual Tommie Smith Youth Track and Field Meet will be held in Louisville on Friday, August 10th and Saturday, August 11th at the University of Louisville’s Owsley Frazier Cardinal Park. The event is open to children ages 5 to 18 of all ability levels.  Phone 574-8045 for more information.

The mission of the Louisville Metro Health Department is to protect, preserve and promote the health, environment and well being of the people of Louisville.  To learn more about the Health Department’s programs and services go to www.louisvilleky.gov/health.
