Louisville – Many people may know it as the Greenwood Boat Dock, a place where many have enjoyed the Ohio River for years..
That familiar spot off Greenwood Road is now set to be transformed into what could easily be called “Waterfront Park Southwest.”
“This is a great day for all of Southwest Jefferson County, and I am thrilled by it,” says Councilman Rick Blackwell (D) 12.
Blackwell joined Mayor Jerry Abramson and Council Members Bob Henderson (D) 14 and Vicki Welch (D) 13, for the announcement of a new proposed master plan for Riverview Park.
“This is great,” says Henderson. “Many people may think that all the good projects go to Downtown or the East end. This shows things are coming out our way. Things are happening out off Dixie Highway. I have to thank the Mayor for his leadership.”
Mayor Abramson proposes development of the 87 acre park off of Greenwood Road will be a budget priority in the coming budget year.
“When I was elected in 2002, I sat down with the Mayor and we talked about projects just like this. I am just glad to see the people of the Southwest are not being forgotten,” said Blackwell.
In the announcement, Mayor Abramson plans to follow a course similar to one used 20 years ago, by asking the Waterfront Development Corporation to be in charge of the multi-year, multi-million dollar project for Riverview Park.
“Now people in Fairdale, Okolona, PRP and Valley Station will be able to drive just ten minutes to a beautiful park, instead of 30 minutes to the one downtown,” says Welch. “This just shows how a community can work together and we thank the Mayor for his leadership.”
In 2004, the park was expanded from 16 to 87 acres.
Among the proposed improvements: an entertainment pavilion, a water play area, dog run and hiking trails.
The Mayor will map out his budget priorities for the coming year before the Metro Council in a special meeting on Thursday.
