Yarmuth and SBA Team up to Help Veteran Entrepreneurs at Jobs Fair
Event Also Features More than 40 Currently-hiring Employers Representing 500+ Jobs
In addition to featuring more than 40 currently-hiring area employers, Congressman John Yarmuth’s Veterans Jobs and Resources Fair will include advice and information for military veterans interested in exploring business ownership. At the event, the U.S. Small Business Administration’s Kentucky District Office will help connect veteran entrepreneurs with business counseling, training, and small business loans.
“Thanks to their experience in the military, so many Louisville veterans have the skills and leadership qualities needed to be successful business owners. I am thrilled to work together with the Small Business Administration to help connect these potential entrepreneurs to the resources they need to thrive,” said Congressman Yarmuth.
Since 2009, the SBA has dramatically increased the number of resources available to veterans and Veteran Owned Small Businesses (VOSBs), supporting 4,300 loans worth more than $1.5 billion in financing for veteran entrepreneurs. The SBA has also launched starting a Small Business Development Center with veteran outreach efforts in Kentucky. SBA advisors with information on those efforts and lending opportunities will be on site at Yarmuth’s event to speak with potential entrepreneurs.
“Military veterans have the skills to be excellent employees, but they also possess skills necessary to be excellent entrepreneurs. Those skills include planning, making sound decisions, leadership, building a strong team, flexibility and innovation,” said Linda R. George, acting District Director for the SBA Kentucky District Office. “Veterans can be very successful small business owners, and we at the SBA can share information about our free start-up counseling services through our resource partners, including the SBDC, SCORE and the Women’s Business Center, as well as information about our Patriot Express loan program for Veterans and contracting and exporting opportunities for veteran-owned small businesses.”
Other SBA accomplishments for veterans include:
- Doubling lending to VOSBs since FY 2009. Cumulatively, SBA has made more than 12,000 loans to VOSBs supporting more than $3.1 billion in lending over the past three years. This includes more than $460 million delivered through the streamlined, low-interest Patriot Express program for veterans, which SBA extended through 2013.
- Working with both contracting officers and VOSBs to deliver the highest-ever percentage of federal contracts to service-disabled veteran-owned small businesses in FY2010, totaling $10.4 billion.
In addition to the SBA’s Kentucky District Office, more than 40 businesses hiring for more than 500 positions will be represented, as well as KentuckianaWorks, Louisville Metro Government, the Kentucky Office of Employment and Training/Veterans Services, the Kentucky Department of Veterans Affairs, the Veterans Affairs Medical Center at Zorn Avenue and the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR).
While focused on assisting veterans, the Congressman’s event is open to all residents of the 3rd Congressional District.
