Once again, Councilman Tom Owen is encouraging residents of District 8 to leave the comfort zone of their homes and go out and talk to their neighbors at a simple meeting place: the front porch.
“For the last six years, we have encouraged Front Porch Tuesdays. Each year, we have watched it grow,” says Owen. “With the beautiful spring we have had so far, we’ve structured a time for neighbors to talk and visit with one another.”
The idea is a simple one. On two Tuesday evenings in the month of May, neighbors will either host or go visit their neighbors on the opposite side of the street. On May 8th, people who live on the even numbered side of the street will host. Then on May 15th, the odd number side of the street will welcome an evening of conversation.
In apartments and streets where there are no neighbors across the street, Councilman Owen is asking folks to use their imagination.
“But most of all: keep it simple. The purpose is neighborliness and community building while having fun and getting to know one and other,” says Owen. “Many of us remember the days growing up when you knew just about everyone in the neighborhood. That is the goal here.”
Owen says hosting does not have to be elaborate. A cookie and a glass of lemonade can go a long way toward helping folks find common interests.
“After all,” he says “for some, community is built one ‘howdy do’ at a time. You might be surprised in what you learn about someone if you will just take the time to introduce yourself and listen.”
