Metro Parks Replacing Much of Pool’s Mechanical Systems
Metro Parks has extended the closure of Mary T. Meagher Aquatic Center’s Olympic pool until April 14. A repair project encountered unexpected delays after contractors had to cut through a thicker-than-expected concrete pool lining and large segments of bedrock below the pool floor while replacing the main drain system that failed on February 25.
Metro Parks is also completing a major pool improvement project originally scheduled to take place this spring. That work includes replacing aging pipes and installing a new filtration system that will greatly reduce the need to apply chemicals to the water. Together, the planned pool improvement project and main drain replacement will cost approximately $450,000 and bring the pool into compliance with health and safety codes.
The facility’s therapy pool and fitness center remain open for normal hours.
“While this has been a terrible inconvenience to our customers, the good news is we’re replacing nearly all of the pool’s mechanical systems, which will resolve some lingering problems that have been frustrating to us and the pool’s many users,” said Jerry Brown, assistant director of Metro Parks. “We’re replacing pipes and redesigning the main drain, which will improve overall recirculation and quality of water in the pool. We really appreciate everyone’s patience as this difficult project is completed.”
Brown said Metro Parks didn’t know exactly what hidden conditions to expect until crews dug an 80-foot-long trench along the bottom of the pool. That’s when workers discovered the exact depth of concrete on the pool floor and ultimately had to drill through bedrock to make room for the new, larger drain system.
