Three members of the Louisville Metro Council will sponsor workshops they hope will identify ways to turn Louisville Metro into a pedestrian-friendly city.

Sponsored by Councilman Tom Owen (D-8), Councilwoman Tina Ward-Pugh (D-9) and Councilman Robin Engel (R-22), the Walkable Community Workshops will focus on successful pedestrian design, safety, education and encouragement, as well as strategies to promote walking, bicycle use and alternative transportation.

Two workshops will be held Monday at the following times and locations:

8 a.m. - 12:30 p.m., Caritas Peace Center, 2020 Newburg Rd.

1 p.m. - 5:30 p.m., Mellwood Arts & Entertainment Center, 1860 Mellwood Ave.

Both sessions will include a walking audit of a section of Newburg Road or Mellwood Avenue to help participants understand and identify obstacles to walking, as well as to suggest short-term and long-term solutions.

The Walkable Community Workshop is being held in partnership with Louisville Metro Planning and Design Services and the National Center for Bicycling and Walking. Persons interested in participating in the workshop, which is free, should call 574-3467 to register. Space is limited. Participants should wear comfortable shoes and clothes suitable for the weather.
