APCD request to EPA to discontinue ambient air monitoring site

Wednesday October 19, 2011

The Louisville Metro Air Pollution Control District (LMAPCD) operates an ambient air monitoring site at Wyandotte Park (21-111-0044) located at 1104 Beecher Avenue. The site consists of two monitors; one PM2.5 federal reference method sampler that operates on a daily basis and one TEOM PM10 continuous sampler.

The site is located on the roof of a single story building which was once a swimming pool house operated by the city park service. This building is now abandoned and scheduled for either demolition or a complete refurbishment. LMAPCD is unable to secure this site as the building itself contains features which enable public access to the roof. The roof where the samplers are located has always been subject to safety hazards and now is the target of increased and frequent vandalism. The escalated vandalism is occurring on a weekly basis. Therefore, under the provisions of 40 CFR Part 58.14 (c) (6) the LMAPCD is requesting approval from the US EPA to discontinue monitoring at this site. If the request is approved, LMAPCD’s network would continue to exceed the minimum siting requirements for PM2.5 and PM10 per 40 CFR Part 58, Appendix D (4.6 & 4.7) for our metropolitan statistical area.

See the letter to the EPA for more details.
