Gallopalooza Horses Auctioned for Charity

Saturday October 23, 2004

Mayor Jerry Abramson will join Gallopalooza Committee members, community leaders and many local and regional artists at the Louisville Palace Theatre, 625 South Fourth Street, for the Gallopalooza Charity Auction on Saturday, October 23.

Gallopalooza: Louisville’s Sidewalk Derby, is a community-wide art project that features the skills of amateur and professional artists, including greats such as Peter Max and Louisville’s Marvin Finn.

Many of the 223 decorated Gallopalooza horses were named after past Kentucky Derby winners and other notable equines. These life-size, fiberglass statues have graced streets throughout our community since early spring, literally transforming Louisville into an outdoor art gallery.
“Gallapalooza has truly offered us an exciting celebration of past Derby winners,” said Mayor Abramson. “This successful project has been a tremendous point of pride for our entire community.”

There will surely be many bidders for the 51 horses on the live auction block since people from as far away as the U.S. Virgin Islands have expressed interest in purchasing them. By 10:30 p.m. or so, the future destinations of these horses – like home gardens, business lobbies and company worksites – will be determined.

Nearly 50 of the horses have already been sold to sponsoring businesses and 119 horses are available through an Online Auction that is in progress through November 1. Online Horses will be sold in five lots. Lot 1 closes Tuesday, Oct. 26; Lot 2 closes Wednesday, Oct. 27; Lot 3 closes Thursday, Oct. 28; Lot 4 closes Friday, Oct. 29; and Lot 5 closes Monday, Nov. 1. Proceeds from the final sale of the equine art will benefit Brightside (Mayor Jerry Abramson’s clean and green program) and the purchaser’s charity of choice.
