By a vote of 18 to 8, Councilman Jim King (D) 10 was elected President of the Louisville Metro Council in its first meeting of 2008 on Thursday night, January 10th.
“I’m humbled to be given the opportunity to lead you as your president and I will honor your vote by doing my very best,” said King after receiving a handshake and the official gavel from Rick Blackwell (D) 12. “Whatever the differences that separate us, so much more should unite us. As a whole, we serve a cause greater than our individual parties or even our individual districts.”
King was elected to the Metro Council in 2004. In the past two years he has been President Pro-tem of the Council and Majority Leader for the Democratic Caucus. He has held key positions on the Council’s Budget and Planning and Zoning Committees.
The Council again elected Kathleen Herron as Clerk by a unanimous vote of
26 to 0. She has held that position since the first Metro Council went into operation in 2003.
King has pledged to work toward open and honest government. He said every day should be focused on making government work better for the citizens of Metro Louisville.
“In my presidency, communication, honesty, openness and dedication will be the order of the day and I believe it will allow us to raise the discourse to a higher level to make our community a better place in which to live, work, and play.”
