Old Jail Renovation Improves Public Meeting Experience

Zoning, planning, codes meetings among those affected

Louisville, KY (July 14, 2014) – Mayor Greg Fischer today showed off newly completed renovations to the Old Jail Building Auditorium that have improved the experience of everyone attending the many public meetings there.

The $185,000 project makes it easier for meeting attendees to see and hear the proceedings, and improves the overall professionalism of the space. Hosting meetings and hearings by Planning & Design Services, Codes and Regulations and the Master Commissioner’s Office means some of the most important decisions about land use, along with public input to them, are made in the auditorium. And meetings sometimes last for hours.

Common complaints about the auditorium were that it was hard to hear what was being said at the front of the room, and difficult to see visual information presented during meetings. Both of those complaints have been addressed in a big way.

New closed casement board/commissioner seating, that replaced open tables and visible cables, includes new microphones. Those microphones are connected to new speakers that amplify sound clearly throughout the room.

A new projector and larger new projector screen have been installed along with a large screen video monitor, all of which help audiences to see presentations clearly. The renovation also improved lighting and made it possible for presenters to hook up their own computers to the audio visual system.

Fischer said, “These improvements will make it easier for people who care enough to carve out time to come here and take part in their city government at work.” The work was made possible by a $75,000 contribution from the Louisville Downtown Partnership.

The auditorium renovation is part of a larger goal the mayor set to improve customer satisfaction with the city’s rezoning process. The Planning & Design Services Department, working with the Mayor’s Innovation Delivery Team, has shaved seven weeks off the minimum time it takes to rezone a property. That’s an improvement of 33 percent.
