WHAS-TV Telethon to Raise Support for Mayor's Give A Day Week

Monday April 1, 2013

On April 3rd viewers invited to pledge volunteerism for
Mayor’s Give a Day week of Service

Reality show contestants, athletes, community leaders and Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer will answer phone calls during the first WHAS11 Give A Day telethon on April 3, 2013. The ABC-TV affiliate will encourage viewers to pledge volunteer time for the mayor’s annual “Give a Day” week of service, scheduled April 13 – 21.

The telethon will be hosted by WHAS11 anchors Doug Proffitt and Melissa Swan, and was launched at the suggestion of WHAS11 General Manager Linda Danna, who came to the station from Fresno, California in 2012.

“I’ve been so delighted with the level of caring and compassion I’ve experienced in Kentuckiana since I moved here six months ago,” Danna said. “We’re excited that WHAS11 will be part of helping make a difference for the community.”

Viewers can pledge their time during the telethon by calling 502-571-2345 or 1-866-885-1848 (toll-free). Phone lines will be open from 4:30 – 7 PM on Wednesday, April 3, 2013.

More than 100,000 volunteers are expected to take part in the service week, surpassing last year’s efforts. Residents can pledge their time for assisting nonprofits, cleaning up parks, donating cans of food, giving blood and helping local schools.

“We need everyone’s help to make Louisville an even more compassionate city by contributing some of your time to make our city an even better place,” said Mayor Fischer. Volunteers can commit to one of hundreds of existing projects listed at MyGiveADay.com or can suggest their own.

The telethon is timed with the launch of the WHAS11 “On Your Side” campaign, which highlights the station’s 63-year tradition of broadcasting excellence and commitment to improving the community it serves.
