Health Department to Offer Flu Shots by Appointment to Those at High Risk

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (September 29, 2006) Beginning Monday, October 2, the Louisville Metro Health Department will offer flu shots (by appointment only) at five locations throughout the community to those at high risk for complications from the flu.  This includes:

  • People age 50 and older
  • Children age 6 months to 5 years. This is the first year that the CDC has especially recommended flu shots for children 2 to 5 years of age.
  • Children 2-18 years of age on long-term aspirin therapy
  • Household members and caretakers of infants younger than 6 months of age
  • Pregnant women
  • People with chronic medical conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, and asthma
  • People with weakened immune systems
  • Residents of long-term--care facilities
  • Health-care personnel who provide direct patient care

Flu shots will be given by appointment at the following sites.  Phone the site to make an appointment.

Flu shots are $25 each and pneumococcal shots are $35.  The nasal flu mist vaccine is also available for $35.  Medicare Part B or Passport insurance plans will cover the cost for flu immunizations. The Louisville Metro Health Department will not turn anyone away because of inability to pay.

Following recommendations of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Health Department is first offering flu shots to high-risk residents.  The Health Department expects to make flu shots available to the general public later in the season.
