Louisville Metro Council President Ron Weston today named a five-member ad hoc committee to study the smoking ban issue, and report its findings to the Public Health and Safety Committee, the committee to which the proposal has been assigned.
President Weston, D-13, said the ad hoc committee would study reports on the health and economic impacts of a smoking ban, and would hear testimony from experts and citizens on the subject.
"This is the information gathering stage," Weston said. "This is a serious issue that could have a significant impact on our citizens and businesses, and it deserves thorough consideration."
George Melton, D-15, will head up the ad hoc committee, which will meet for the first time at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 7 on the Third Floor of City Hall. Other members include Cheri Bryant Hamilton, D-5; Tom Owen, D-8; Kevin Kramer, R-11; and Kelly Downard, R-16.
Madonna Flood, D-24 and chairwoman of Public Health and Safety, praised the creation of the ad hoc, saying it could devote the time necessary to sift through reports and present that information to the full committee.
"It's time to begin work on this issue," Downard said. "It is this ad hoc committee's charge to create a thoughtful and timely report that we can share with the entire council. I anticipate that, with diligence, we can finish a report shortly."
