Mayor Declares Friday "College Colors Day" to Inspire Going to College

Monday November 12, 2012

Wear college colors to work this Friday

Thousands of college graduates throughout Louisville will be wearing their alma mater’s colors on Friday to help inspire others to seek their college diplomas – one of several events to mark College Application Month sponsored by 55,000 Degrees.

Mayor Greg Fischer today declared Friday, Nov. 16 as College Colors Day to help spread the word about the importance of earning college degrees for citizens and Louisville’s economic prosperity. He encouraged people to wear sweatshirts, ties or scarfs of their alma mater — or their favorite college — to work on Friday.

“November is prime time for more than college football and basketball,” Fischer said. “For those without a college degree, it’s the time to put plans into action and apply to college.”

Fischer is chairman of the 55,000 Degrees movement, the community commitment to increase the number of college graduates by 55,000 over the next eight years. By increasing Louisville’s percentage of working-age adults with college degrees from one-third to one-half, the region will attract more companies and good-paying jobs in the 21st century knowledge-based economy.

55,000 Degrees and its education partners are working hard throughout November to encourage high school seniors and adults alike to fill out college applications in November to have the best chance at beginning college next year.

Many colleges and universities have deadlines for applications before year’s end, and applying now gives would-be college students their best shot at being accepted to the school of their choice, said Mary Gwen Wheeler, executive director of 55,000 Degrees.

Throughout the month, 55,000 Degrees and its education partners have scheduled events to help high school students, their parents and adult learners find out how they can afford, attend and succeed at college. For a complete list of College Application Month events, go to
