Celebrate National Park and Recreation Month with Metro Parks

In honor of National Park and Recreation Month during July, Metro Parks will offer the public a chance to win great prizes by answering daily weekday trivia questions through its Facebook, Twitter and Flickr sites.

“Our parks are interactive places where residents can learn about nature, go on a picnic, participate in a sport and volunteer to keep their community clean,” said Metro Parks Director Mike Heitz. “It only makes sense that we make this promotion interactive, and reward those who are keeping up with us on our social media sites.”

Prizes include passes for free rounds at Metro Parks golf courses and swimming at Metro Parks pools; tennis rackets from the Louisville Tennis Center; pottery from the Metro Arts Center; and campground and program passes to Jefferson Memorial Forest.

In addition, the Louisville Zoo, the Belle of Louisville and Transit Authority of River City have donated prizes for the promotion. Those who haven’t already signed up for the Metro Parks social media sites can do so here by clicking on the icons on the right-hand side of the page. Clues can also be found for the daily trivia questions throughout the Metro Parks Web site.

Most prizes will be sent through the mail, and winners will be notified directly by Metro Parks staff. We will be announcing the winner of the promotion each day, along with the question and answer, at beginning July 2.

Since 1985, the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) has celebrated National Park and Recreation Month each July as a way to bring awareness to the health, lifestyle and mental benefits of using parks. For a listing of family-friendly Metro Parks events during the month of July, visit

Here are some health facts about the use of parks:

  • Active users of public parks have a lower body mass index (BMI)
  • People who visit parks for longer periods of time (one hour or more) have significantly lower systolic blood pressures
  • Park users who are more physically active and who make frequent contact with frends durign their leisure are less likely to report feeling depressed
  • Citizens who have better access to parks, visit parks more frequently, and engage in physically-active park behaviors also make fewer visits to the doctor
