Spring Break: adjusted hours and Junior Olympics at Community Centers

Tuesday March 28, 2006

Metro Parks to keep kids active and engaged while school’s out

Mayor Jerry Abramson announced that community centers and outreach sites operated by Metro Parks will adjust their hours and offer a new sports competition on April 3-7, to provide positive activities for Louisville children during spring break.

All 17 Metro Parks community centers will be open during additional evening hours on April 3-7.  Three community schools – operated in partnership with Jefferson County Public Schools – that are normally open only after school hours will be open all day.  Children and teenagers will be able to take part in activities such as arts and crafts, video game tournaments, flag football games, basketball, movie days, field trips, and more.

Metro Parks is conducting a U.S. Junior Olympics Skills Competition for children ages 8-13 at 19 sites throughout Louisville during spring break.  This free local event, conducted under the direction of the U.S. Olympic Committee with sponsorship from Kellogg’s Frosted Flakes, allows winners to qualify for regional and national Junior Olympics competitions in four sports.  The U.S. Olympic Committee and Kellogg’s donated the equipment necessary to stage this competition. A different compeition will be held each day.

“During spring break, our community centers will be open late to ensure that kids have enriching activities to keep them safe,” said Abramson.  “Through the Mayor’s Healthy Hometown Movement, we’re also finding new ways, such as the Junior Olympics, to teach kids about the benefits of fitness and healthy living.  The reward of possibly getting a free trip to the regional or national Junior Olympics later this year will help us draw lots of participants over spring break.”  The national competition takes place in August at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.

To register for the Junior Olympics Skills Competition, contact the community center or outreach site where you wish to participate.  All participants must show proof of age (eligibility is determined by the child’s age on August 31, 2006), and a parent or guardian must sign a registration form.  Athletes may also register on the day of an event by arriving one hour early.  The schedule for events at each location is:

  • Monday, April 3 – basketball shooting competition
  • Tuesday, April 4 – soccer dribbling and shooting competition
  • Wednesday, April 5 – rapid rally tennis competition (serve a ball and keep it in play against a wall for 30 seconds)
  • Thursday, April 6 – track and field competition (50-meter dash, standing broad jump, and softball shot put)

Starting times at each site are listed below.
