Two members of the Louisville Metro Council will be honored for outstanding community service on Tuesday night when Project One Inc. holds its 24th Annual Awards of Excellence Banquet at the Ali Center.

Councilwomen Mary C. Woolridge (D-3) and Vicki Aubrey Welch (D-13) will join other honorees in the spotlight for their dedication to helping young people in Metro Louisville.

“Helping our youth succeed in the future has always been a priority for me,” says Woolridge. “I am humbled to be honored for something that I enjoy doing and is an investment in our community.”

Woolridge will be given the Distinguished Leadership Award during the banquet.

Welch will receive the Montest Eaves Award, created in honor of the late educator and former Assistant Superintendent of the Jefferson County Public Schools.

“Project One focuses on the needs of our young people to help them with opportunities in life,” says Welch. “I am honored to be given this award for our participation through the Fairdale Community School. We should all be a part of the education of our young people so they can become viable members of society.”

For more than 20 years, Project One has been a school based, community operation to help children further their education and develop the skills needed to face the future with jobs and training.

The banquet will get underway with a reception at 6:00pm at the Ali Center. Dinner begins at 7:00pm. This year’s theme is “24 years of Golden Opportunities”. The keynote speaker will be Xernona Clayton who is the Founder, President and CEO of the Trumpet Awards Foundation.

Councilwoman Judith Green (D-1) will make a presentation to Mrs. Clayton as well as Project One. This year, the Metro Council provided $125,000 in funding to help find over 700 young people summer jobs in the Metro Louisville area. Project One will recognize the Council’s efforts with a special honor.

The event is also the primary fundraiser for Project One. For more information, call 778-1003
