It is a seminar every woman should be aware of and take advantage of; a chance to learn how to keep safe at home, work and play.
“We had many phone calls last year from women who wanted to attend but couldn’t,” says Councilwoman Madonna Flood (D) 24. “I promised to make this available again this year to those who wanted to learn how to be safe.”
District 24 is sponsoring a free Women’s Self Defense Seminar on Thursday, May 8th from 6:00pm to 8:00pm at Southern High School in the back gym. Southern High School is located at 8620 Preston Highway. Louisville Metro Police join Flood as sponsors of the seminar.
Sergeant Greg Burnette of Property Crimes and Officer Robert Duke, the Division 7 Resource Officer, will show you the best way “not” to become a victim.
“Don’t let this be the training you wish you had attended,” says Flood. “You do not have to be physical to fight off crime. You will be given tips on personal protection and how to walk away unharmed from an assault without raising a hand.”
The seminar’s trainer, Sergeant Burnette, has worked as a patrol officer
and a Field Training Officer focusing on domestic violence and sex
crimes. He is a certified Krav Maga instructor and is a Kentucky Law Enforcement Council certified police instructor in teaching defensive tactics. Burnette also has a first degree Black Belt in Shaolin Kempo.
“We have the experts and I hope everyone takes the opportunity to come and learn how to avoid bad situations. Take the time to find out how to fight crime and more importantly protect yourself,” says Flood.
This training is for ladies 12 and over. Refreshments will be served. If you have any questions or to register, please call 574- 1124.
