New playground equipment and a new sports facility have become a reality for two elementary schools and a middle school in Metro Council District 2. Councilwoman Barbara Shanklin (D-2) won approval for $100,000 in improvements for area school children.
“The children of these schools have waited far too long for safe recreational spaces,” says Shanklin. “With these improvements, now their education can be well rounded and the community can take pride in their future achievements both in class and out.”
On Thursday night, the Metro Council gave final approval to plans for upgrading the playgrounds of the three schools:
· Newburg Middle School: allotted $25,000.00 for a soccer field with bleachers and landscaping.
· Rangeland Elem. School, $40,000.00 for Playground equipment.
· Slaughter Elem. School, $30,000.00 for playground equipment
Shanklin used money from her District 2 Construction Infrastructure Funds and her Neighborhood Development Funds to move the playground projects forward.
“I consider this an investment in the welfare of our children,” says Shanklin. “I also believe everyone in the community will take advantage of these facilities and I look forward to their completion next year.”
