Aquatic Center Closes Aug. 19 - Sept. 3 for Maintenance

Thursday August 16, 2007

Fitness Center Remains Open; Breslin Park’s Outdoor Pool Season Extended for Swimming

Mary T. Meagher Aquatic Center's Olympic pool and therapy pool will be closed for maintenance from Sunday, August 19, through Monday, September 3; the pools should reopen at 5 a.m. on Tuesday, September 4.  In addition to cleaning both pools, Metro Parks is making improvements to the aquatic center’s entry area and locker rooms.

The facility’s fitness center will remain open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on days that the pool is closed.  Fitness center users will access that area of the building through a side entrance.  Additionally, Metro Parks is keeping the outdoor pool at Breslin Park (located at Lexington Road and Payne Street) open Monday to Friday through September 3 to accommodate the aquatic center’s customers.  The weekday schedule at Breslin Park:

  • Lap swimming: 7 to 11 a.m. (full pool); 6 to 8 p.m. (deep end only)
  • Recreational swimming: 4 to 6 p.m. (full pool); 6 to 8 p.m. shallow end only)

Daily entry fees at Breslin Park’s pool are $2 for ages 18 and over, and $1.50 for ages 17 and under.  Customers with aquatic center memberships will be admitted at no charge.  All current memberships will be extended for two weeks to make up for inconveniences during the shutdown period.

Councilwoman Tina Ward-Pugh (D-9), whose district includes the aquatic center, said: “I appreciate Metro Parks’ continued commitment to keep the pool’s lining and pumps clean for our citizens who swim there.  This and other improvements will be welcomed by our member users who understand how important it is to maintain this great facility.”

In the aquatic center’s entry area, Metro Parks will repaint the walls, replace old floor tiles, and repair areas where water has been leaking into the building.  Exterior grading and landscape improvements will prevent leaks in the future.  Unsightly ceilings in the main locker rooms will also be repaired and painted.

Metro Parks usually closes the facility twice annually to drain the two pools so that pool linings and pumps can be cleaned. The pools are then filled with fresh water.

Customers are encouraged to call (502) 897-9949 on Tuesday, September 4, to ensure that the pools have re-opened.
