In support of the Every 1 Reads initiative, several Louisville Metro Council members will read to children Aug. 21, 23 and 24 at Metro Government’s State Fair booth. (The booth is located in the South Wing in the Main Street Kentucky section.)

Here is the schedule for council members: Tom Owen, D-8, 10:30 a.m. Saturday; Rick Blackwell, D-12, noon Monday; Glen Stuckel, R-17, 12:45 p.m. Monday; Dan Johnson, D-21, 5:15 p.m. Tuesday; Kevin Kramer, R-11, 5:45 p.m. Tuesday; and Julie Raque Adams, R-18, 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Every 1 Reads is a partnership of Greater Louisville Inc., Louisville Metro Government and Jefferson County Public Schools. The program’s goal is to have every child in Jefferson County Public Schools reading at grade level within four years. Nearly 20 percent of those students could not read at their grade level when the initiative was launched last September.

JCPS projects that at least 10,000 hours per week of volunteer reading tutoring will be needed during the next four years, as well as 2,500 additional volunteer mentors for middle and high school age students.
