In an effort to combat high rates of obesity, cancer and heart disease in District 13, Councilwoman Vicki Aubrey Welch is once again sponsoring an event that could save lives and help many live longer.
“Too often people will put off going to the doctor or take the time to see why it is they just don’t feel well,” says Welch. “The District 13 Health Expo is an opportunity to get free health information that may lead to the discovery of a health problem. More importantly, it’s doing something to take better care of yourself and your family.”
The District 13 Health Expo will get underway on Saturday, September 18th from 2:00pm to 6:00pm in the auditorium of the Fairdale Elementary School, 10104 Mitchell Hill Road.
Among the services offered: free health information, exhibits and demonstrations; blood pressure and Body Mass Index Testing and Blood Glucose testing. Flu Shots will be provided at $25 per person but for those who are Medicare Part B participants, the shots are free.
“This year, there is a special effort to make people more aware of the problem of undetected colon cancer,” says Welch. “Recently, the Metro Council’s Health and Human Needs Committee learned the problem of colon cancer is growing. As Chairwoman of that committee, I think every one needs to know early detection will go a long way in fighting that disease.”
A highlight of the Health Expo will be a giant walk through colon exhibit that shows the various stages of colon cancer. It is sponsored by the Colon Cancer Prevention Project.
More than 20 vendors ranging from the Louisville Public Health and Wellness Department to Norton Health Care will be on hand. The Health Expo will include important information about the services and programs of groups such as the Elderserve Inc.., Gilda’s Club, Family Health Center – Fairdale, the Lung Cancer Alliance and the Center for Woman & Families.
“The goal of the District 13 Health Expo is simple. We want to promote good health in a fun upbeat way and reach a significant audience who can benefit from this information,” says Welch. “The Fairdale Community Fair is a great event that brings a community together. The Health Expo is designed to keep the community healthy.
