4th Street Goes Wireless

Wednesday August 17, 2005

Businesses launch more wireless hotspots downtown
See Louisville's Wi-fi Hotspots

Mayor Jerry Abramson said today that Louisville is becoming a more high-tech community, with additional wireless Internet access now available at 4th Street Live!, Theatre Square and Jefferson Square.

“Providing wireless service in more and more of our public spaces is key to creating a tech-savvy community that can compete in the knowledge-based economy of tomorrow,” Abramson said.

Metro Government partnered with Greater Louisville Inc.–the Metro Chamber of Commerce, and the Technology Network (TeN) to enlist business sponsors and partners who worked together to provide free wireless Internet access in open public spaces.

The mayor and sponsors will celebrate the launch of wireless service on 4th Street at today’s Technology Network’s monthly meeting, August 17, at 5 p.m., at Hard Rock Café.

The new “hotspots” on 4th Street join all Louisville Free Public Libraries and the Lower Highlands along Baxter Avenue from E. Breckinridge Street to Highland Avenue, as other areas offering wireless service under the LouisvilleHotSpot.org umbrella. St. James Court and 4th Street between 4th Street Live! and Theatre Square will come online by Labor Day. Other businesses also are able to be a part of this partnership in setting up a wireless area near their location and come under the community brand of wireless service.

“A technology-intensive community creates and attracts more jobs, educates more students, and continues to deploy more advanced technologies,” said Brian Oldham, CTO of Appriss, Inc., one of LouisvilleHotSpot.org’s business partners. “We are excited to be a part of this latest high-tech endeavor to keep our community competitive.”
