Mayor Fischer Urges Congress to Pass Debt Bill
Monday August 1, 2011
Statement from Mayor Greg Fischer regarding the debt agreement in Washington:
Late Sunday night in a conference call with the White House and the US Conference of Mayors, I learned of the deal outline to raise the debt ceiling. While I am relieved that Washington appears to be close to ending the debt-limit drama, I urge all members of the House and Senate to pass the bill. Failure to reach a compromise will have far-reaching consequences for Louisville and other cities across the nation, at a super-critical time just as we are turning the corner on the recession and putting our citizens back to work.
Once the bill is passed, I encourage Washington to take up the matter of creating action that helps put our citizens back to work. That is the number one issue that people speak to me about – jobs. Jobs must be central to the bipartisan commissions deliberations as well as a clear understanding of how their decisions affect people in cities like Louisville.
