Olympic Pool Closed as Repairs Continue;
Therapy Pool and Fitness Center Open
The Olympic pool at Mary T. Meagher Aquatic Center developed a significant leak last night, and will be closed for several days while Metro Parks officials work to make repairs. The facility's therapy pool and fitness center remain open.
The main pool had been closed and drained since Sunday afternoon, when chemical levels in the pool became unstable. Workers had refilled it by Monday afternoon, with the intention of reopening this morning, before an employee discovered the leak around 10 p.m. last night.
Metro Parks is currently working to locate and repair the leak. The exact schedule for re-opening the main pool is not known at this time.
"By the end of the day, we’ll have a good understanding of what we’re up against," said Jerry Brown, assistant director of Metro Parks. "Once we identify the exact source of the problem, we’ll have a better sense of how quickly we can re-open the main pool. Our team is working around the clock to get the pool back in service for our customers."
Updates are available by calling 502/897-9949 or visiting www.louisvilleky.gov/MetroParks/recreation/aquaticcenter.htm.
This spring, Metro Parks is planning to spend up to $300,000 on improvements to the aquatic center’s main pool. In addition to replacing aging pipes, Metro Parks plans to install a UV filtration system, which will greatly reduce the need to apply chemicals to the water.
Mary T. Meagher Aquatic Center is located at 201 Reservoir Road in Crescent Hill Park. The facility features an Olympic pool that offers lap swimming, water exercise and swim lessons; a therapy pool; and a fitness center with Cybex, free weight and cardio equipment. Regular hours are Monday to Friday from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday from noon to 6 p.m.
