Doing Our Part: Final Week
Monday March 12, 2007
With the final days near, the “Doing our Part from the Heart” campaign has more than doubled the goal set for the Mohawk District of the Boy Scouts of America.
Some 200 boxes are ready to be shipped to troops in Iraq and now the campaign move towards calls for financial help.
“It costs about $8.10 a box for shipping,” says Councilwoman Madonna Flood (D) 24. “So, we are calling on the public. If you want to help this would be the best way.”
The campaign began February 15th. The Boy Scouts along with help from volunteers at Interlink Counseling Services, Inc have been manning drop off points for personal items for the troops. In 2006, the Scouts collected 46 boxes. They set a goal to double last year’s amount.
“We have now doubled that,” says Flood. “We can not say thanks enough to this community for what has been donated so far. I spoke with a staff sergeant who returned from Iraq in August. He said that sending these boxes is very important because receiving items from total strangers let them know folks are thinking about them and supporting them.”
The boxes are full of personal items; we are now concentrating on “treats,” snack food items such as peanut butter and crackers, beef jerky, granola bars or power bars if anyone would like to continue to donate items.
Republic Bank set up a special account for donations to pay for postage when the drive was over. So far, there is more than $850 in the account.
Donations can be made at any Republic Bank. Donations can also be mailed to 4808 Outer Loop, Louisville, Kentucky 40219. Make sure to note on the check “For the Heart” account.
