Free Tax Preparation Can Help Filers Claim Federal Tax Credit

Monday February 3, 2014

Free tax services are available again this tax season to qualified Louisvillians – which can help increase the number of residents who qualify for the valuable federal tax credit known as the Earned Income Tax Credit.

This year, 27 sites are offering free tax preparation throughout Louisville.

Mayor Greg Fischer says the money can help families and the local economy.

“The EITC can be as much as $6,000 for families that have the full eligibility, which, can help start a savings account, put braces on your kid’s teeth, buy a car, pay college tuition or start a college fund for your child.”

The free tax service is offered to individuals and families with a gross income of less than $52,000 last year or who qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit.

The IRS says many people who are eligible for the tax credit are not aware of it and don’t claim it --- leaving millions of dollars behind.

For more information about the free tax service or to find a tax preparation site near you, go to the Louisville Asset Building Coalition website at http://labcservices.org/ or call the local social services help line at 211.
