Mayor Jerry Abramson today announced that the city is launching the home-ownership phase of Liberty Green - the city’s second HOPE VI project that replaces public-housing complexes with mixed-income neighborhoods.
“We’ve had tremendous success with our rental units in Liberty Green, and we’re hoping to translate that into home ownership,” Abramson said.
Bill Weyland and Holly Wiedemann have been selected as the developers for the project, called The EDGE at Liberty Green. They are responsible for more than $80 million of projects in Louisville and throughout the state. Both developers specialize in projects that maintain continuity and the historical integrity of existing urban neighborhoods.
Weyland, from Louisville, is the owner and founder of CITY Properties. He designed the mixed-use historic renovation of the Henry Clay Hotel and created the Glassworks project, a former abandoned factory that now mixes art studios with urban living. He is also responsible for building the Louisville Slugger Museum and Bat Factory on historic Main Street.
Wiedemann, from Lexington, has developed projects from Ashland to Glasgow and several cities in between. Her projects include: The St. Francis in Louisville, a mixed-use project that includes a high school and retail stores on the lower floors and apartments above; the Midway School Apartments; and Artek, a 38-unit condominium development under construction in downtown Lexington. Construction will begin next year turning the former TB Hospital in downtown Ashland into apartments for survivors of domestic abuse.
“It’s important for us to provide a bold design, while making sure the homes blend in with the character of the surrounding buildings,” Weyland said. “Our new homes at The EDGE will be livable and comfortable, while at the same time making a statement.”
The designs will include traditional walk-ups that are found in urban neighborhoods, such as New York’s Greenwich Village and Chicago’s Lincoln Park. The buildings will have three floors. Buyers can purchase one floor of the building, two floors or the entire home. Prices will range from $100,000 to $500,000.

Liberty Green Rental Units
Since construction started in 2005, more than 185 mixed-income rental units have been completed – 180 are now leased by residents.
Forty of the units are occupied by former Clarksdale residents. All residents who moved out of Clarksdale were given the option of returning to Liberty Green.
