Councilwoman Barbara Shanklin (D-2) will join the Men of Peace Presbyterian Church for a special Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Brunch this coming Saturday, January 16th.
“This is a traditional event were with the vision of Dr. King, we will be helping the children of Metro Louisville,” says Shanklin. “Given the current state of the economy, those children need our help.”
Once again, the theme of the brunch is “Keeping the Dream Alive.” This year’s featured speaker will be Betty Baye’, Columnist for the Courier Journal. The event will get underway at 11:00am at Newburg Middle School, 4901 Exeter Avenue.
The event is more than just a ceremony to honor Dr. King. The brunch is a fundraising effort for various youth programs sponsored by the Men of Peace throughout the year. Those programs include sending kids to summer camp, basketball games and providing some with Christmas presents. Donations will be sought from those who attend the brunch.
Tickets to the brunch are $20 per person, $160 for a table. All money raised will go for the benefit of youth programs.
“We owe thanks to the Men of Peace, who by Dr. King’s example, are following his teaching to make life better for all of us,” says Shanklin. “I hope everyone will take some time this weekend to remember the impact of Dr. King on our national and remember that justice and equality are for everyone.”
