News Release

800+ Local Volunteers Age 55-90's Answering Call To Service Produce Nearly $4 Million in Impact

May 7-11, 2012 is National Senior Corps Week and hundreds of older volunteers are celebrated locally for their outstanding contributions to our community.

For the third year, the Corporation for National & Community Service, national funder of the Louisville Metro FGP (Foster Grandparent Program) and RSVP (Retired & Senior Volunteer Program), is publicly recognizing the huge impact from members of the Senior Corps programs (FGP, RSVP and Senior Companion Program –SCP) with a celebratory week of acclaim and (hopefully) additional recruitment. Based on the 2010 Independent Sector’s Kentucky average value of $17.65 per hour, the volunteers of these two programs provided caring services to our community totaling $3.9+ million dollars!

“At a time of increased need and declining resources, volunteers age 55 and over are stepping in to fill the gaps,” said Wendy Spencer, CEO of the Corporation for National and Community Service. “Today, more than ever, communities need the talents and skills of all Americans to help move this nation forward. Senior Corps volunteers are delivering enormous social and economic benefits to our communities and demonstrating that service is good for the nation and those who serve.”

Currently 85 Louisville Metro FGP volunteers serve local children identified as needing special attention for help with reading, mentoring, or tutoring in schools and day cares. These volunteers commit to a minimum of 15 hours a week during the school year, donating 86,116 hours during 2011. FGP volunteers have income requirements please call us for more information.

The Louisville Metro RSVP had 718 members serve 137,472 hours between January 1, 2011- March 31, 2012. This equates to well over $2.M in value per the Independent Sector’s 2011 quoted national average. RSVP volunteers serve from “A to Z” in Jefferson County, KY – from adult day cares, family assistance, hospitals, senior nutrition & mobile meals, museums and schools, rehabbing homes for energy conservation, veterans services to the Louisville Zoo… and more!

More volunteers are needed and several free benefits are included with membership in either program. For more details on FGP call 502/574-7307. For more details on RSVP call 502/574-1530.
