The effort to help men and women serving in Iraq and Afghanistan has been on going for four weeks now but Mother Nature has not been cooperating.
The 2008 Doing our Part From the Heart Campaign has only reached the half way mark of collecting personal items for the military with only two weeks left to go.
“We had set a goal of collecting 300 boxes of items,” says Councilwoman Madonna Flood (D) 24. “But we have had a rough few weeks because of first ice and then snow and I am sure there may be some economic factors that are involved in lower donations totals compared to last year.”
The 2008 Campaign kicked of on February 14th. Donations will be taken up to March 31st.
“I know between the weather and higher gasoline cost there may be some people who can not get to our drop off locations,” says Flood. “But remember we are talking about brave men and women who are serving our country. We can not forget about them.”
The campaign is collecting various items for the soldiers. Everything from toothpaste to sunscreen is needed. Disposable wipes to flea collars are items that are hard to come by in remote areas of Iraq and Afghanistan.
So far, Republic Bank has collected $1200 to cover the cost of shipping the items to be boxed up when the campaign is over.
Flood is working this year’s campaign with the Mohawk District of the Boy Scouts of America, the Okolona Business Association, the Okolona Fire Department, Republic Bank and Interlink Counseling Service Inc.
Other sponsors of the drive are Mortgage World, Scheller’s Fitness & Cycling, Jefferson Mall Customer Service Center, Lamkin Wealth Management, Allegra Print & Imaging, Citizens Union Bank, BC Roosters and Ong’s Urgent Care.
“If you and your group can help us out in the next two week, I and the families of those men and women serving will appreciate it,” says Flood. “We will even make arrangement to come and pick up what ever has been collected.”
Last year, the Doing Our Part From the Heart Campaign collected 240 boxes of items for soldiers
