With the April 15th deadline fast approaching, Metro Council members will join Congressman John Yarmuth, Ky-3 and Mayor Jerry Abramson in a news conference on Friday, March 20th to encourage use of the VITA Tax Service.

“This is an important service that will help many lower income families with free tax help,” says Councilman Bob Henderson (D-14). “The volunteers here can go a long way in making sure families get every deduction they are eligible for.”

The Louisville Asset Building Coalition, the main sponsors of the VITA program, are hosting a news conference on Friday, March 20th at 11:00am. It will be held at 10646 Dixie Highway.

VITA stands for Volunteer Income Tax Assistance. It first began in the Louisville area in 2001. Since then some 24,500 families have been helped and some $32 million dollars has been brought back to the community. In 2008, the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program helped 7,000 individuals in 11 locations throughout Metro Louisville.

Henderson along with Council members Vicki Aubrey Welch (D-13), Marianne Butler (D-15), Tina Ward-Pugh (D-9), Rick Blackwell (D-12), David Tandy (D-4), Brent Ackerson (D-26), Judy Green (D-1) and Jon Ackerson (D-18) have provided funding assistance for the program in 2009.

“The LABC is also expanding services and will even help a family file for KCHIP, the Kentucky health insurance program for Children,” says Henderson.

Sponsors have been invited to the news conference along with other members of the Metro Council.
