Louisville – Many homeowners in Metro Louisville have spent a long weekend dealing with the wrath of Mother Nature and flooding.
“We have received many calls from residents who still have flooded basements as a result of the combined sewer system,” said Councilman Dan Johnson (D) 21. “MSD has a free device that can minimize basement flooding.”
Johnson says MSD still offers a free backflow valve that when installed can keep sewers from backing up into a basement. District 21 had many flooded basements, especially along South Third Street.
MSD began installing such devices in the early 1990’s as a result of flooding in the Metro area.
The premise for it is a simple one. The device is installed on a sewer line. It allows water to flow out of the basement of a home. If water were to come back into a home, the device automatically closes the value to keep water from flowing into a basement.
“After this weekend, I have been assured that if a homeowner is interested in one, it can be installed,” says Johnson. “And it can be installed free of charge.”
