Family Assistance Center: Operations Continue at Louisville Gardens

Monday September 26, 2005

Louisville Metro Government and American Red Cross officials announced today that the Family Assistance Center set up at Louisville Gardens to assist residents displaced by the recent hurricanes will remain open at least through Friday.

The one-stop facility offering housing, job, health, social-security and other assistance services will be open Monday, Sept. 26 through Friday, Sept. 30 from noon to 6 p.m.

Officials had planned to consolidate the center’s services at the Red Cross offices, however the volume of residents visiting the center at the Louisville Gardens today and over the weekend has remained steady.

“We had about 75 people sign up for services this weekend and about 90 people registered for the first time at the Family Assistance Center today,” said Joanne Weis, director of Louisville Metro’s Human Services department.

Weis said that many Gulf Coast residents planning to return home may have changed plans because of additional flooding from Hurricane Rita and continued difficulties with water contamination and health-care infrastructure in the disaster zone.

Metro Government and the American Red Cross will re-evaluate the continued operation of the Family Assistance Center by Friday. The center is set up on the main floor of the Louisville Gardens, 525 W. Muhammad Ali Blvd.
