This past Sunday runner Brad Alsop attempted to run 400 consecutive miles to raise funding to help mail packages to men and women serving our country as part of “Doing our Part from the Heart.” However, physical concerns stopped the run on Monday.

Here are Brad Alsop’s own words about what happened.

“Hello, and thank you for supporting "Doing Our Part From the Heart."

As you may know, I set out on Sunday, July 25 to complete a run in excess of 400 miles. But just as many things in life, it wasn't meant to be. After 50 miles, I began to experience extreme leg pain. This was very much a surprise considering I had trained running much longer distances in much harsher conditions. I still continued for another marathon distance with excruciating pain until the miles slowed to nearly a 20-minute pace. I considered walking the last marathon back to the Patriots Peace Memorial until some friends pulled up on the side of the road and talked me out of the run.

It has been said when you find yourself at a low point of something you love is when you also make the most positive changes in your life. I certainly plan to come back stronger and more equipped than before to achieve this goal in the future.

My hope is people will continue to support Doing Our Part and keep our troops overseas in their thoughts and prayers. Thank you.

Councilwoman Madonna Flood (D-24), who began this campaign to help the US Military in remote areas of the world four years ago, praised Alsop’s effort and spirit.

“We are extremely supportive of Brad’s decision to stop and appreciate his commitment to Doing Our Part From the Heart,” said Flood “Although his legs wouldn’t cooperate his heart continues to be with our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan and I can’t think of a better cause and I hope people will still contribute in his name.”

While the run may be on hold, those who have been inspired by the effort can still help support the troops and help mail packages. Anyone who would like to contribute funds for postage can drop off a donation at any Republic Bank in the Metro area. Just make sure it is marked for Doing Our Part From the Heart.
