Louisville Water Receives We CARE Award from Republic Bank

Thursday September 29, 2011

Louisville Water is one of seven area businesses to be honored with a We CARE award from Republic Bank. The winners were announced in a ceremony September 27.

In 2005, Republic Bank launched the We CARE Awards as a way to give recognition and appreciation to local companies who stress the four elements contained in the CARE name itself – Community Activity Recognition Enterprise. There were 39 finalists for the 2011 awards; Louisville Water received the award for the Printing and Manufacturing Category.

“On behalf of all Louisville Water employees, we are proud to accept the We CARE Award from Republic Bank,” said Greg Heitzman, President and CEO of Louisville Water. “We recognize our success over the past 150 years has come from the Louisville community we serve and in turn we must reinvest our time, talent and resources in health and education to sustain a vibrant future for the next generation.”

Louisville Water and its employees are engaged in the community on several levels. Each year, Louisville Water employees contribute over 5,400 volunteer hours to local and national organizations. In addition, employees raise $170,000 for three charities: Metro United Way, Fund for the Arts and Water For People.

In the past ten years, Louisville Water has developed education and public health partnerships in local schools. Each year, 40,000 children participate in “Adventures in Water” education programming which includes free tours and curriculum-based instruction at school. Louisville Water’s community dental partnership, Smile Kentucky! provides free dental screenings, treatment and education at 30 schools each year. In 2009, Louisville Water began working with EDGE OUTREACH, a local-based entity that works to bring safe drinking water around the world. Louisville Water employees have assisted in fundraising endeavors, education and outreach opportunities.

Much of Louisville Water’s philanthropic endeavors are tied to public health, science and innovation. Since the company began operations in 1860, its mission has centered on providing the region with a safe, dependable supply of drinking water. Louisville Water’s 150 year history includes advancements in science to improve the quality of drinking water. The company’s education outreach, community partnerships and employee engagement programs center on improving the quality of life in this community and beyond.

The Republic Bank We CARE Awards have again brought to light the quality and variety of volunteer work done by so many companies in our community,” said Steve Trager, Chairman and CEO of Republic Bank.

“All of us at Republic Bank recognize the employees of the nominated companies, and the winning companies, for the community efforts they put forth that contribute so much to making this such a great place to live and raise our families.”

“I’m so proud of the way employees of Louisville area companies reach out into our neighborhoods and communities every day,” said Ken Selvaggi, general manager of WAVE-TV and the media partner for the award. “There’s an obvious growing culture of caring that the Republic Bank We CARE award is nurturing. I’m particularly impressed with the quality of the employee volunteer efforts made by the newly nominated companies for this year’s award. Louisville is indeed a warm, friendly, giving community and WAVE-TV is proud to be part of recognizing the wonderful spirit of giving represented by these awards.”

Winning companies received a handmade glass sculpture award designed by Louisville glass artist Casey Hyland, and media partner WAVE-TV will produce and broadcast video vignettes highlighting each winning company.
