Abramson Announces First Commercial Tenant for Park DuValle

Tuesday March 23, 2004

Mayor Jerry Abramson today unveiled the first commercial tenant in the nationally recognized mixed-income Park DuValle neighborhood – a Soupy’s Deli.

“Our plans for Park DuValle have always included stores and services for residents to walk to,” Abramson said. “This restaurant, which will seat up to 70 people, will offer a healthy variety of soups, sandwiches and other fare that will add to the quality of life for nearby residents.”

Soupy’s, a locally based franchise started by Danny Bowling, is scheduled to open in the Park DuValle Towne Center on April 5. The business will be operated by Park DuValle resident Marshall Gazaway.

Abramson said it was appropriate that Gazaway is opening the first business in the Park DuValle Towne Center.

“Marshall has long, strong roots in this neighborhood and he’s been with us every step of the way as we’ve redeveloped and revitalized Park DuValle,” Abramson said. Gazaway served on the policy board and Neighborhood Advisory Council for the revitalization of Park DuValle and was involved in Community Oriented Policing efforts in the area.

Abramson said there are four other locations for retail development in the Park DuValle Towne Center. A hair salon is expected to open soon. Abramson said local officials are actively looking for opportunities to fill the other three spots in the Towne Center. In addition, other businesses are being recruited for the area, including the recruitment of a full-service grocery.
