It’s a chance to shake off a harsh winter and find out what is going on in the neighborhood. Councilman Tom Owen is encouraging everyone in District 8 to participate in Front Porch Tuesdays on May 12th and 19th.
“I am asking people to leave their comfort zone and take a trip across the street,” says Owen. “By leaving your house, you might find a great way to make you and your family safer.”
Four years ago, Owen proposed a simple way to build community spirit. As a child growing up, the Councilman had seen how the front porch or front yard was a place where folks set out to get to know one another and build stronger and safer neighborhoods. So, Owen’s idea is to repackage in modern times that older way of doing things.
The logic behind Front Porch Tuesday is simple. On Tuesday, May 12, odd-numbered houses visit the even numbered porches on the other side of the street. On May 19, even-numbered houses visit the odd numbered porches.
“This past winter, during the storm, people came to rely on one another for help, with fallen trees or electricity,” says Owen. “Wouldn’t it be nice if we could maintain that helping attitude throughout the year? This is one way to start.”
