Louisville – Shawnee Park and Riverview Park will have something in common this weekend when each park offers a different way to enjoy the beauty of the Ohio River.

The Second Annual Urban Wilderness Canoe Adventures will get under way on Friday, October 4th in Shawnee Park and Saturday, October 5th at Riverview Park offering free canoeing and training to those who are interested.

“Canoeing may not be the first thing you think about when you talk about seeing the Ohio River but for many people it is a great way to relax and enjoy nature’s beauty,” says Councilwoman Cheri Bryant Hamilton (D-5).

“Urban Wilderness Canoe Adventures present us with a new way to show people how lucky we are to have two beautiful parks along an historic river,” says Councilman Rick Blackwell (D-12)

Hamilton and Blackwell along with Council members Attica Scott (D-1), Barbara Shanklin (D-2), Vicki Aubrey Welch (D-13), Cindi Fowler (D-14), and David Yates (D-25) are using Neighborhood Development Funds to sponsor two sessions for canoeing.

This event will offer free canoeing trips conducted in a safe and stable 24 and 32-foot Voyageurs, which hold between 9 and 15 participants. Safety equipment and trained staff will be provided and the event is open to everyone 3 and older. Parks officials advise participants to wear comfortable outdoor clothing that can get wet and to bring refillable water bottles.

The first session will be held at Shawnee Park on Friday, October 4th. Those who wish to participate can park next to the Dirt Bowl courts. Enter Shawnee at Southwestern Parkway and then follow the signs.

The second session will be held at Riverview Park on Saturday, October 5th. Those who wish to have fun with canoeing can park in the upper lot and then meet in the lower lot near the river.

Pre-registration is requested. Call the Jefferson Memorial Forest at 502-368-5404 for more information and to reserve a slot.
