Neighborhoods are getting active again with spring weather as people head out doors to get the yard in shape or take care of something around the house. Councilman Tom Owen is encouraging residents of District 8 to take some time and get to know your neighbors.
Front Porch Tuesday is back again for its sixth year on May 17th and May 24th.
“This idea has grown in six years and many have told us it reminds them of the days when everyone knew who lived on their street and we all watched out for each other,” says Owen.
The idea is a simple one. On two Tuesday evenings in the month of May, neighbors will either host or go visit their neighbors on the opposite side of the street. On May 17th, people who live on the odd numbered side of the street will host. Then on May 24th, the even number side of the street will welcome neighbors from across the street for a chat.
Councilman Owen asks apartment dwellers or folks who live opposite a park or business to just use their imagination about getting together with neighbors.
"In modern times, we're busy people and too often stay to ourselves," says Owen. ”Now after a long Winter and wet Spring, Front Porch Tuesdays may just be the excuse to bring us out of our comfort zone to meet neighbors over a cookie and lemonade. A caring and watchful community is built one Howdy Do at a time."
The Councilman says hosting does not have to be elaborate. Sometimes simple conversation will lead to finding common interests as you get to know other residents.
