Councilwoman Barbara Shanklin is seeking information from residents of District 2 on a very important issue. She wants to know: if it were available, would there be public interest in a gun buyback program?

“In the last few days, as we have prepared to give away our free gun locks, people have asked me that question,” says Shanklin. “So on Friday afternoon, I will begin finding out if there is interest in such a program.”

The Councilwoman will hand out flyers to anyone who comes to pick up a free gun lock on Friday afternoon. She says if there is significant interest, she will begin working towards a gun buyback program and will try to find out if any other groups would be willing to get involved.

“We have had so much violence against young people with guns these last two weeks, it may be time to look into another gun buyback program,” says Shanklin. “Past buyback programs have been successful in taking some guns off the streets and out of the hands of children.”

The free giveaway of 100 gun locks will get underway on Friday afternoon beginning at 4:00pm. Anyone in the area who would like to receive a gun lock can go to 4809 Unseld Boulevard. The giveaway will be over at 6:00pm or until the gun lock have been distributed.

Anyone who is interested in a gun buyback program can contact Councilwoman Shanklin’s office at 574-1102.
