Eighth District Councilman Tom Owen will sponsor "Front Porch Tuesdays" for two consecutive Tuesdays in April to encourage residents to deliberately set aside time to interact with neighbors and strengthen the community.

"We lost a lot when we gave up front porch sitting after dinner," said Owen. "Front Porch Tuesdays is an effort to recover that old-fashioned practice for at least two weeks."

From 6:30 p.m. until sunset on Tuesday, April 12, people living on the even-numbered side of streets in the 8th District are encouraged to be out on their front porch and invite those from across the road over for a chat or a glass of lemonade. On April 19, residents on the odd-numbered side of the street are invited to return the favor. Councilman Owen suggested residents with no front porch use a side yard, stoop or balcony, and residents with no neighbors across the street gather with homeowners next door or on an adjacent street.

Each night will close with "Front Porch Tuesdays Afterglow." Family and neighbors can stroll the Baxter Avenue/ Bardstown Road and Barrett Avenue commercial corridors and take advantage of discounts and specials commemorating the event.

The next planning meeting for Front Porch Tuesdays is set for 7 p.m. this Tuesday at Highland Presbyterian North, 969 Cherokee Road, (formerly Parrs Rest). All citizens and organizations in the Highlands are invited to attend.
