One week into the campaign, the Mohawk District of the Boy Scouts of America are half way to their goal of helping service men and women in Iraq.

“I am very pleased with the response we have received from the public,” says Councilwoman Madonna Flood (D) 24. “This effort shows we care.”

The Scouts kicked off “Doing Our Part from the Heart” one week ago. Their goal is to collect 96 boxes of those items most take for granted; razors, wet wipes, candy, and so on. The drive is on until March 15th.

“One boy scout troop has collected 32 boxes,” says Flood. “We have had 10 cases of toothpaste, a case of Wet Wipes and a case of band-aids donated.”

Ong’s Urgent Treatment Center at 12937 Shelbyville Road has been an added as a drop off point for many in the east end who would like to donate.

“The biggest challenge we have right now is paying for postage of these boxes to Iraq,” says Flood. “We have raised $300 in our account with Republic Bank and that will mail about 30 boxes.”

Republic Bank has set up an account to accept all monetary donations to cover postage for the items going to Iraq. Donations can also be mailed to 4808 Outer Loop, Louisville, Kentucky 40219. Make sure to note on the check “For the Heart” account.
