“We urge parents to take advantage of this opportunity and to sign permission slips so that their children can be immunized and protected from the flu this year,” said Louisville Metro Public Health and Wellness Director Dr. Adewale Troutman.

The school immunization campaign is voluntary and each child will need a permission slip signed by a parent or guardian in order to be immunized.

Vaccine for this year’s school immunization campaign is being provided through the federal Vaccines for Children (VFC) program, a federally funded initiative that provides vaccines at no cost to children who might not otherwise be vaccinated because of inability to pay. CDC buys vaccines at a discount and distributes them to state health departments and certain other entities. The Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness is bound by federal and state regulations regarding who is eligible for this vaccine. Kosair Children’s Hospital is also providing nurses and other staff to help support this year’s campaign through its Children’s Hospital Foundation Office of Child Advocacy.

The Department of Public health and Wellness reminds everyone to get immunized against the flu. For the first time this year, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is recommending universal vaccination for everyone 6 months of age and older. People will now be able to protect themselves against both H1N1 and seasonal flu with a single vaccination.

Prices for immunizations at public clinic sites (as opposed to the school immunizations, which are free) are $25 for injectable (shot) vaccine and $30 for nasal mist. Pediatric preservative-free vaccine is $27.50. Passport and Medicare will cover the cost for individuals with those insurance plans. No one will be turned away because of inability to pay at the time of service.

The remaining public clinic schedule is as follows. No appointments are necessary.
