When the campaign was over in 2007, 240 boxes of basic necessities were on the way to soldiers who were serving the United States in Iraq.

“There are no words to express the generosity Okolona and Metro Louisville showed when we finished last year’s Doing Our Part, from the Heart Campaign,” said Councilwoman Madonna Flood (D) 24. “We have not forgotten our folks in the military.”

Flood and the Mohawk District of the Boy Scouts of America, the Okolona Business Association, the Okolona Fire Department, Republic Bank and Interlink Counseling Service Inc have kicked off the 2008 Doing Our Part campaign in hopes of exceeding last year’s efforts.

The campaign begins on Valentine’s Day February 14th and ends March 31st. Like last year, Boy Scout troops along with Interlink will man drop off points through out the Okolona area.

Republic Bank will continue its partnership with the effort by setting up an account to accept all monetary donations to cover postage for the items going to Iraq. Donations can also be mailed to 4808 Outer Loop, Louisville, Kentucky 40219. Make sure to note on the check “From the Heart” account.

“We know from last year after hearing back from some soldiers that simple things like sun screen, toothpaste and deodorant are appreciated,” says Flood. “These are the small comforts that can make life easier for them as they serve our country.”

In 2006, 46 boxes of items were collected by the Boy Scouts of the Mohawk District, which covers Okolona and all of Bullitt County. Last year, donations came in from not only the Metro Louisville area but the Commonwealth of Kentucky

“Everybody got into the act,” said Flood.

Other sponsors of the drive are Mortgage World, Scheller’s Fitness & Cycling, Jefferson Mall Customer Service Center, Lamkin Wealth Management, Allegra Print & Imaging, Citizens Union Bank, BC Roosters and Ong’s Urgent Care.

“On Valentine’s Day, we’ll show these brave men and women serving in Iraq, we care for them,” says Flood. “Help us spread the love.”
