Thursday January 25, 2007

Players and representatives from the Cincinnati Reds joined young athletes, along with officials from Louisville Metro Government, the West Louisville Sports League and the Louisville Bats at Shawnee Park today to celebrate $30,000 in improvements to that park's ballfields. They also outlined opportunities for similar improvements in Wyandotte Park.

  • Aerify infields and outfields (completed Fall & Winter 2006)
  • Seed infields and outfields (completed Fall & Winter 2006)
  • Add soil as needed to provide good drainage (Spring 2007)
  • Fertilize to promote health turf (Spring 2007)

Wyandotte Park (plan is still under review)

  • Complete same maintenance tasks accomplished at Shawnee Park
  • Expand number of fields (currently three)

"The Reds are partnering with Louisville to create 'fields of dreams' for our youth," Mayor Jerry Abramson said.  "Baseball can provide such positive experiences that teach sportsmanship, teamwork and self-discipline to help our young people realize their dreams both on the field and in life."

Cincinnati Reds infielder Brandon Phillips gets cheered on by the team's mascot at Shawnee Park. Cincinnati infielder Brandon Phillips and former third baseman Chris Sabo took part in a “first pitch” at the event, which included remarks from Cincinnati sportscaster Marty Brennaman, Cincinnati Reds Community Fund Director Charley Frank, Louisville Bats President Gary Ulmer, Deputy Mayor Rick Johnstone and Metro Parks Director Mike Heitz.
