Metro Council begins review of Mayor’s Budget Proposal on Tuesday

Councilman Jim King (D-10), chair of the Metro Council Budget Committee has announced the schedule of hearings for review of the Mayor’s Proposed 2009 -2010 Budget.

“This will be a challenging budget year and we want to make sure taxpayer dollars are spent wisely and needed services are provided. Public safety is a top priority,” says King. “The committee will review the Mayor’s proposal and keep a close eye on how well Metro Government is navigating through this tough economy.”

The Committee will kick off its hearings on Tuesday, June 2nd with an overview of revenue for the coming fiscal year. There will also be an overview of Expenditures that has been proposed.

“Competition among departments for funding will be at a higher level than previous years” says Councilman Kelly Downard (R-16), who is vice chair of the Budget Committee. “This budget process will present us with the perfect opportunity to prioritize government services and look for more efficient means to operate Metro government.”

Public Safety agencies, including Metro Police, Louisville Fire & Rescue, EMS and Corrections will come before the Committee on June 9th and 10th.

There will two opportunities for the public to comment on the budget. The first public hearing will be held on Tuesday, June 16th from 10:00am to 12:00pm. The second will be on Wednesday, June 17th 6:00pm to 8:00pm.

“The Budget Committee encourages interested individuals and citizens to take advantage of these public hearings to let us know what Metro Government priorities should include,” says King. “Guidelines to sign up for those hearings will be publicized.”

All hearings of the Committee will be broadcast live on Metro TV. New this year, webstreaming will allow anyone with a media player to watch the hearings on line. A schedule of the complete hearings for the month of June will be listed on the Metro Council home page. Go to:
