In an effort to educate homeowners about a way to prevent flood damage in basements, Councilman Dan Johnson recently mailed some 11,000 information cars to home owners in District 21.
“Our District was the first test area for MSD’s back flow program in the early 90’s,” said Johnson. “The August 4th flooding has once again shown that many homeowners do not know about the program which in many cases can keep storms water and sewage out of their homes during flooding.”
The postcard gave out basic information about what MSD offers through the Basement Backflow Prevention Program. The two most common installations in the program are a sump pump and a backwater and ball valve.
The effectiveness of the program was discussed in Wednesday night’s Ad Hoc Committee on the 2009 Flash Flood. MSD officials indicated some homes could have been spared flood damage if a backflow valve had been installed to shut off flood water coming back into home.
The Ad Hoc Committee has indicated a better education effort is needed to help prevent future damage.
“For homeowners MSD will pick up the cost of this program,” says Johnson “I hope when residents get our information they will get in contact with MSD and get this process moving forward.”
