After spending a week designing and creating their puppets and rehearsing their lines, about 20 junior puppeteers from Portland Community Center's summer day camp are ready for their curtain call.
The youngsters will present the 30-minute children's opera, "Chip and His Dog," at 3 p.m. Friday, June 10 in the gymnasium of Portland Community Center, 640 N. 27th St.
The youths, ages 8-12, have spent the week making the puppets, props and scenery and learning to manipulate the characters as part of a weeklong Opera Puppet Theater workshop sponsored by Councilwoman Cheri Bryant Hamilton. Councilwoman Hamilton funded the workshop, conducted by the Kentucky Opera, with an appropriation from the 5th District Neighborhood Projects Reserve Fund.
Hamilton said programs like the Kentucky Opera's Opera Puppet Theater workshops play an important role in educating our community's youth, providing a point of entry for a complex art form and developing the opera audience of tomorrow.
A similar camp will be held the week of June 20 at Shawnee Community Center, 607 S. 37th St.
